Getting to Rialto

Every lane in central Venice seems to lead to the Rialto Bridge, and the yellow signs prove it. Walk if you can; the boat is slower and dearer than people think.

The Rialto Bridge sits in the middle of Venice, halfway between the train station and St Mark's Square. From most hotels in the old city it is a walk of 10 to 30 minutes, and the route is signposted on yellow signs painted or hung at almost every junction: Per Rialto.

The vaporetto is the other way in, and it is a lovely ride down the Grand Canal. It is also EUR 9.50 a trip in 2026. Here are the walking routes, the boat lines and stops, the fares, and the airport options, with tips for anyone dragging a suitcase.

The quick answer

On foot, Rialto is 25 to 30 minutes from Santa Lucia station and Piazzale Roma and 10 to 15 minutes from St Mark's Square: follow the yellow "Per Rialto" signs. By water, line 1 stops at Rialto Mercato and Rialto, line 2 at Rialto. A single ticket costs EUR 9.50 for 75 minutes and a 24-hour pass EUR 25. From the airport, the Alilaguna Orange line stops at Rialto for EUR 18.

How do you walk to the Rialto Bridge from the train station?

Follow the main route east through Cannaregio: Lista di Spagna, the Ponte delle Guglie, the Strada Nova, then the signs. It takes 25 to 30 minutes.

  1. Leave Santa Lucia station and turn left along the Lista di Spagna.
  2. Cross the Ponte delle Guglie over the Cannaregio canal; the old Ghetto is a short detour to the left.
  3. Keep straight along Rio Terà San Leonardo and the wide Strada Nova, Venice's main shopping street.
  4. At Campo Santi Apostoli, follow the signs over the little bridges to Salizada San Giovanni Grisostomo and the foot of the Rialto Bridge.

It is about 2 km with several stepped bridges, easy with a daypack, tiring with a big suitcase. Morning and evening it is a commuter route; at midday it fills with day-trippers. The Real Hidden Venice walk follows the same line with a Venetian guide, starting opposite the station and ending at the Rialto Market two hours later.

Make the walk from the station the tour: two hours through Cannaregio and the Ghetto to the Rialto Market, with a Venetian.

How far is the Rialto Bridge from St Mark's Square?

About 10 to 15 minutes on foot, through the Mercerie shopping streets. Under 1 km.

Walk under the arch of the clock tower, the Torre dell'Orologio, on the north side of St Mark's Square, and follow the Mercerie, the chain of shopping lanes that has linked the Republic's two centres since the Middle Ages. Pass the church of San Salvador and you come out in Campo San Bartolomeo, with Goldoni's statue, at the foot of the bridge.

Between 11 and 17 the Mercerie are elbow to elbow. Early morning or after dinner, the same walk takes ten calm minutes. Coming from the Rialto end, the signs say Per S. Marco.

How do you get from Piazzale Roma to the Rialto Bridge?

Walk about 30 minutes through Santa Croce and San Polo following the signs, or take vaporetto line 1 or 2 from Piazzale Roma.

Piazzale Roma is the bus and car terminal, a few minutes from the station across the Ponte della Costituzione. On foot, head into Santa Croce and follow the yellow signs via the lanes of San Polo; you reach the market side of the bridge first. The vaporetto from Piazzale Roma runs the whole Grand Canal and is the easy option with luggage.

If you arrive here and want a gondola, the Piazzale Roma gondola leaves from Fondamenta Cossetti. Pick the 90-minute or 2-hour ride to reach Rialto; the shorter ones stay in the canals near the terminal.

Which vaporetto goes to the Rialto Bridge?

Line 1 stops at both Rialto Mercato, on the market side, and Rialto, on the San Marco side. Line 2 stops at Rialto with fewer stops on the way.

Two stops, one on each bank:

Line 1 is the slow boat that calls at every stop on the Grand Canal: about 20 to 25 minutes from Ferrovia (the station) to Rialto, and the better sightseeing ride. Line 2 skips stops and is quicker. Grab an outside seat at the front or back for the view. Both continue to St Mark's.

What is the cheapest way to cross the Grand Canal at Rialto?

Walk over the bridge, which is free. The traghetto between Santa Sofia and the Pescheria costs EUR 2.

The Rialto Bridge was the only fixed crossing of the Grand Canal until 1854 and it is still the busiest. If it is jammed, the traghetto, a gondola ferry rowed by two gondoliers, crosses from Santa Sofia by the Ca' d'Oro to the fish market for EUR 2. Line 1 also hops from Rialto Mercato to Rialto, but at EUR 9.50 that is the dearest 200 metres in Venice.

How do you get from Venice airport to Rialto?

The Alilaguna Orange line runs from Marco Polo airport straight to a Rialto stop for EUR 18. Or take a bus to Piazzale Roma and walk or ride the vaporetto.

Fares from Alilaguna and ACTV. The Alilaguna boat is the scenic choice: it crosses the lagoon and enters the Grand Canal, though it is slower than the bus. The bus is quicker to Piazzale Roma, then you either walk 30 minutes or take line 1 or 2.

Any tips for luggage and crowds around the Rialto Bridge?

Avoid crossing the bridge with a big suitcase at midday, take the boat if you have heavy bags, and travel early or late.

The bridge is all steps, up and down, with no ramp. With a suitcase, take the vaporetto to the stop on your hotel's side, or cross before 9 or after dinner. Don't stop on the steps to check your phone; step aside to the balustrades. The lanes between the station and Rialto carry the city's foot traffic, and wheeled bags at noon make nobody's day.

Day-trippers: the access fee doesn't apply right now. The 2026 period ended on 26 July, and the city has approved 72 fee days in 2027, starting on Good Friday, 26 March, with QR-code checks on arrival (official access fee site). Overnight guests are exempt but register for a free voucher. All the dates are in our 2027 access fee post.
