The Rialto Bridge is a public footbridge. There is no ticket, no gate and no closing time; you can cross it at 6 am with the street cleaners or at midnight with nobody. What people pay for at Rialto is everything around it: a gondola, a guide, a meal on the Riva del Vin.
This guide covers the bridge itself: its history, the shops, the best places to photograph it, what to see within a few minutes' walk, and what to know about steps, crowds and the access fee.
The quick answer
The Rialto Bridge is free and open 24 hours. It was built in stone in 1588 to 1591 by Antonio da Ponte, replacing a series of wooden bridges, and fully restored in 2015 to 2017. Come before 9 am or after dark to avoid the crowds, and shoot it from the Riva del Vin or from the water. There are steps on both sides and no ramp.

Is the Rialto Bridge free to visit?
Yes. It is a public footbridge, open 24 hours, with no ticket. The only charge that can apply is Venice's access fee for day-trippers on set days.
The access fee is a city-wide charge for day visitors, not a bridge ticket. In 2026 it ran on 60 days between 3 April and 26 July, from 8:30 to 16:30, at EUR 5 booked at least four days ahead or EUR 10 later (official access fee site). It is over for this year. For 2027 the city has approved 72 days from Good Friday, 26 March, to mid-August, still at EUR 5 or 10.
Overnight guests in the municipality don't pay it (they pay the tourist tax at the hotel), and nor do under-14s or Veneto residents. Full rules in our 2027 access fee post. No tour sells "entry" to the bridge: they sell a guide, food or a seat on the water.
When was the Rialto Bridge built?
Between 1588 and 1591, to a design by Antonio da Ponte. Before that, a series of wooden bridges stood here from 1181 onwards.
Five centuries in a few lines, from the bridge's history:
| Year | What happened |
|---|---|
| 1181 | A pontoon bridge of boats links the market to the San Marco bank |
| 1255 | A wooden bridge replaces it |
| 1310 | Partly burned during the failed revolt of Bajamonte Tiepolo |
| 1444 | Collapses under the crowd watching the wedding procession of the Marquis of Ferrara |
| 1524 | Collapses again |
| 1587 | Design contest under Doge Pasquale Cicogna; Palladio and Sansovino had proposed designs in earlier rounds |
| 1588 to 1591 | Antonio da Ponte builds the stone bridge; Vincenzo Scamozzi predicts it will fall down |
| 1854 | The first Accademia bridge ends Rialto's role as the only fixed crossing of the Grand Canal |
Scamozzi was wrong. The single arch spans 31.80 metres and the deck is 22.90 metres wide, carrying three walkways: one down the middle between the shops and one along each balustrade. It is the oldest of the four bridges over the Grand Canal and joins the San Marco and San Polo sestieri.

What shops are on the Rialto Bridge?
Two rows of small shops line the central walkway: jewellers, glass, leather and souvenirs. Their rents once went straight to the Republic's treasury.
The shops were part of the plan from the start, and Venice built them to earn money: the rents funded the state. Today you will find jewellery, Venetian glass, leather goods, masks and postcards. Most shops open around 9 to 10 and close in the evening; before they open, the central walkway is a quiet tunnel of shutters.
Prices match the footfall. For glass, check the "Vetro Artistico Murano" trademark before paying Murano prices; for a mask, the workshops of San Polo and Castello make their own. The view, from either outer walkway, is free.

Yes. A restoration of about 18 months, from 2015/16 to early 2017, cleaned and repaired the bridge for the first time in some 400 years. It is finished.
The fashion group OTB, owned by Diesel founder Renzo Rosso, paid about EUR 5 million. Restorers reused 99% of the original material, cleaned the Istrian stone and repaired the steps and balustrades, and the scaffolding came down on schedule in 2017 (The Art Newspaper). The only row was over a plaque crediting the sponsor (Finestre sull'Arte).
There is no work on the bridge in 2026, so photos come out clean.

Where are the best photo spots for the Rialto Bridge?
The Riva del Vin on the San Polo side, the Riva del Carbon on the San Marco side, and the Grand Canal itself, from a vaporetto or gondola.
- Riva del Vin: the waterfront south of the bridge on the San Polo side. The classic shot, with gondolas and the arch side-on. Best in morning light.
- Riva del Carbon and Riva del Ferro: the San Marco bank, facing the market side. Good in the afternoon, and at sunset the stone glows.
- From the water: an outside seat on vaporetto line 1, a gondola from the Carbon station, or a boat tour passing under the arch.
- From the bridge: the outer walkways look down the Grand Canal both ways. The top of the arch is the spot for the long view towards Ca' Foscari.
Skip the Fondaco dei Tedeschi roof terrace you may read about: the DFS store and its free terrace closed when the lease ended in September 2025 (Moodie Davitt Report).
Pass right under the arch: a Grand Canal motorboat with a guide, from the Correr Museum on St Mark's Square.

Before 9 am and after dark. From late morning to late afternoon it is one of the busiest spots in Venice.
At 7 or 8 the shops are shut, the market is setting up below, and you share the steps with delivery carts and joggers. From about 10:30 the tour groups arrive, and until 17:00 the outer walkways fill with people taking the same photo. Evening is calm again, and the lit arch over black water may be the best version of all.
On access-fee days in spring and summer, the crowd peaks between 8:30 and 16:30. On high-water days in autumn and winter, the Riva del Vin can flood at tides around 100 to 110 cm while the bridge itself stays dry; see acqua alta at Rialto this winter.

What is there to see near the Rialto Bridge?
The Rialto Market, the church of San Giacomo di Rialto, the Gobbo di Rialto, Campo San Bartolomeo and the old Corte del Milion of Marco Polo's family.
- Rialto Market: the fish and produce stalls on the San Polo side, Tuesday to Saturday mornings for fish. Hours in our Rialto Market guide.
- San Giacomo di Rialto: by tradition the oldest church in Venice, with a big clock on its front, on the campo by the market.
- Gobbo di Rialto: the stone hunchback opposite the church, holding up the steps where the Republic's laws were proclaimed.
- Campo San Bartolomeo: at the foot of the bridge on the San Marco side, with the statue of the playwright Carlo Goldoni; a meeting point for half the city.
- Corte del Milion: a few minutes east, where Marco Polo's family house stood.
Ten minutes inland, the bacari of San Polo are the reason most Venetians come here at all: see cicchetti near Rialto.
Is the Rialto Bridge accessible?
No. Both ramps are steps, with no lift or ramp. Wheelchair users and parents with heavy prams cross by vaporetto.
The steps are low and wide, and most people manage them easily, but each side climbs to the central arch. The step-free way across is line 1, which stops at both Rialto Mercato and Rialto; the pontoons are level with the boats. With a light stroller, most parents carry it up.
The guided walks that cross the bridge, the Real Hidden Venice walk included, are listed as not wheelchair accessible because of all the bridges in between. One guest on it warned of "Lots, and lots of walking especially bridges over the canals, up the steps and down the steps."
